Bush Girl

Oil on canvas | 160 x 90cm | Original Painting

My floral work explores themes of adornment of the face and head, as inspired by various historical and cultural tribal practices. As a person hailing from South Africa, I am acquainted with the way many African women carry their wares on their heads and in certain areas, adorn themselves with plant matter and paint created from natural pigments. These practices, some decorative, some pragmatic, possess an inherent beauty and serve to frame faces in powerful and beautiful ways. This painting portraying a woman adorned by West Australian wildflowers speaks of an unabashed and fearless connection to nature and a reverence for the land in which she dwells. I attempt to portray the vegetation in powerful and luscious ways, merging representation with abstraction in increasing degrees. Palette knife work combined with colour washes serve to reflect the impermanence and transient beauty of the world we live in, but where hope and life is always present.
