Liz Gray Art News – July 2021

Greetings!

I hope that life is treating you well and that you have not been too severely impacted by the latest Covid outbreaks and restrictions. I count myself very fortunate to be living in Western Australia, particularly during a time when many others are in lockdown. Although we are not able to travel to far flung places, thankfully Art is something that is always present to help keep our minds illuminated and raise consciousness of the beauty of life. Artists throughout history have commented on this.

Quotes I love

Art evokes the mystery without which the world would not exist.

René Magritte

“Art should be something that liberates your soul, provokes the imagination, and encourages people to go further.” – Keith Haring

“Great art picks up where nature ends.” – Marc Chagall

“I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.” – Michelangelo

Copper Painting workshop “Pinot & Paint” and Winter Exhibition

I’ll be hosting a Copper painting workshop at Applecross Gallery’s Sorrento space on Tuesday evening, 3 August. This will be a wonderful winter, warming evening where I’ll be teaching painting and engraving techniques for working on copper. We’ll enjoy traditional German Gluwhein as well as refreshments. Participants will leave the evening with a ready to hang copper artwork. If you’d like to book a spot, be quick as this workshop is almost full.

Winter Exhibition

Following the workshop on 3 August, I’ll be having a small exhibition of new works at the intimate Sorrento gallery space, with an opening on Saturday 7 August. The event will be held at 32 Raleigh Road, Sorrento – close to the ocean and just a walk from Hillary’s Boat Harbour. The works on show will focus on contemporary women, bold colour and engagement with nature in various forms.

Below, two works that will be on show.

This is a recently completed “casual portrait” on copper of my two daughters and a rear perspective of Danny, the family dog! Please contact me if you’d like to discuss a portrait on copper, of your loved ones and pets.

On the right is a different view of Danny, who you’ll have met if you’ve visited my studio. He’s getting on in years and has gone quite deaf and so imagines he hears things, as you can see in his expression! J
